Well-being tips for winter

Well-being tips for winter

We usually think of the seasons as spring, summer, fall and winter. In Ayurveda the seasons are divided into the 3 main doshas, Pitta, Vata and Kapha. Because during each season or period one dosha is more active than the others. Late fall and early winter is considered as Vata season; cold, dry, light, clear, and moving. The more we go into winter the more the Kapha season starts to show up; cold, wet, damp and heavy.

Luckily for us, Ayurveda has some tools in its box to help us thrive through this season:

  • Get up… – preferably before 6.00 am.
  • …and move – Even though it is cold, dark and wet outside, it is important that you get moving regularly and preferably sweaty. Go for a walk, do some yoga, go to the gym. Whatever makes you happy. Mornings are the best time to boost your circulation and metabolism with exercise.
  • Commit to a routine – It is a good time to start with a daily routine and maintain it as consistent as possible; this will help to keep your natural cycles and sleeping patterns in balance. Tongue scraping, neti pot and nasya oil are good morning routines to start with and on top they help to avoid the seasonal allergies.
  • Get oili – Perform once or twice a week a self – abhyanga, self-massage, with a good quality sesame oil.
  • Stay warm – Drink warm beverages, especially warm water during the day. It activates the metabolism, helps with the circulation and keeps you warm from the inside out.
  • Take a little time to relax – If you haven’t yet, start your meditation practice. It will help you to stay grounded and it helps definitely to get a good night sleep.
  • Spice it up – Drink warm almond milk with turmeric, ginger, cardamom, pepper and cinnamon (Golden Milk)

Take good care of yourself and stay warm! Love, Céline
